		<description>#Forest Stacks (2018-2019)

Forest Stacks is an exciting new community building initiative based in Garvagh Forest. We're working with an excellent team of architects, artists,&#38;nbsp;apprentices, and local people to create temporary public spaces for everyone to use in the forest. A part of the Playstacks initiative, Forest Stacks also contributes to the Garvagh Peoples Forest Project which is currently creating value in the forest with and for local people enhancing the forest, community life and well-being.

Community well-being is at the centre of this project, aiming to use the spaces as a celebratory, community-led gathering place for local people. We are building community as much as we are building spaces. The team believes in the transformative power of gathering through creative cultural activity. When people come together to work collectively, to share aspects of their culture and creative expression, they can create something valuable for themselves and their community.

The Forest Stacks project is delivered in partnership with&#38;nbsp;Voluntary Arts Ireland, Arts Ekta, and the Garvagh People’s Forest Project – Garvagh Development Trust.

This website documents the design studio and research of Professor Ruth Morrow, Queen’s University Belfast, carried out in collaboration with Masters of Architecture Students, teaching with the architect,&#38;nbsp;Robert Jamison , PhD Students, Practitioners and Researchers.

Morrow’s teaching and research stems from her own longstanding material practice in collaboration with the textile designer, Trish Belford which has resulted in patented technologies and globally commericalised products. Her interest in materials is led by a creative, sustainable and ethical approach.&#38;nbsp;</description>

		<description>ExhibitionWe use exhibitions as a celebratory deadline for the material research. In the lab and workshop, material experiments and protoytpes are works-in-progress, loose sketches only fully understood by those developing them. In an exhibition they become scaled, presentable and experienced by others, in space and spatially. It’s here, in exhibition, that material experiments become architecture. &#38;nbsp;

		<description>#Icelandic Materials (2019)

An invitation to Iceland gave me the opportunity to think again about Architecture from the ground up and how natural resources do or don’t impact on the forms we built - for more discussion of this see the associated blog
Iceland imports most of its building materials - perhaps it’s time to think about new ways to use existing local materials - in light, hybrid, circular forms....

The overall project aims to integrate innovation and creative thinking across technological, policy, consumer behaviour and supply chain management domains on a focused region of the UK ie Northern Ireland. It aims to develop ‘socio- technological transitions’ that facilitate a just transition to a circular economy for existing and future plastics, by conserving and creating sustainable energy and materials, developing new products and green jobs, and supporting economic growth in NI and the wider UK.
#Trans-plastics , as one element of this larger project, &#38;nbsp;works&#38;nbsp;in collaboration with the Polymer Processing Research Centre, to&#38;nbsp;develop and prototype 3-D interlocking blocks, using plastic waste, to suit the principles of circular design. We will also collaborate with QUB psychologists to test, collate and respond to manufacturer and consumer/user responses to the resultant prototypes.&#38;nbsp;The project begins in April 2019.

		<description>#Musselcrete

︎ Caitlin Paxton, MArch Student

local island · pure · sustainable · low carbon · harvest · restoration · cultivation · texture&#38;nbsp;· manipulation&#38;nbsp;· parma-violet

'Musselcrete' is inspired by the coast of my home islands, Ireland and the Isle of Man. Musselcrete looks at how natural and organic materials local to these island's coasts can form and be admixtures of concrete.

Through research, there was also the discovery of the mineralogy of shells comprising of different types of Calcium Carbonates (CaC03). Through a calcination process and decarbonation happening in heating the shells, the resulting product is lime. The idea of creating concrete that used mussels as a cement alternative but also as aggregate, creating a pure mix along with water came to fruition and carried forward.

Creating this cement alternative is not only environmentally viable due to locality but also because it is more environmentally sustainable by producing less carbon emissions through calcination. There is also an initiative of recycling and reusing these local shells, the shellcycle. There was also the idea of moulds being a coastal theme with some trials creating ‘silicon-like’ moulds from seaweed.

green facades · material development · sustainable · material revolution&#38;nbsp;

The repositioning of materials in architecture from superficial surfaces to elements that need to be understood through physical contact and informed research-lead exploration, has begun.

As architects take a step away from the digital space and back into the world of materials, the growing question among practices and universities is: Can material development be harnessed into a design-led practice?

 This research project proposes a new methodology that locates the architect within the early stages of material development, in collaboration with other experts, and questions what the architect’s contribution is to the process. The specific process in question is the development of a sustainable facade/component, made of concrete using waste streams and acting as a biotope for plants, microbes and micro-organisms. The project throws up many questions e.g. Why can’t building façades grow/absorb water or dirt? Can a concrete façade act as a habitat or biotope? These questions are framed both within the context of design and material development. [PhD Research Project]

glass-making · seaweed · translucence · heat · sand-casting · weighted shingles

The aim of this project is to reconnect with old technologies for making glass using seaweed in order to produce a glass product that is local to Northern Ireland. Due to the fact that Strangford Lough is a special protection area and that interference to the sea bed is to be kept to a minimum, the building meets the ground in only one place by means of a single column that fans out with stacked beams to support the glass structure above. The furnace becomes a continuation of this column and acts as the main structural support for the steel beams carrying the roof build-up. The building is clad in artisan sand-cast glass shingles which droop over the edge of the roof for drainage and wrap up the furnace to form the flashing detail. On the roof these shingles are weighted down with glass orbs which hang internally creating an atmosphere of kaleidoscopic refracted light.

connection · stitch · concrete · tactility · dynamic&#38;nbsp;

Although concrete has been used as one of the major construction materials over the last one hundred years, we believe that its properties and potential have not yet been fully exploited. Concrete and Textiles are two contrasting, juxtaposed materials; concrete is hard, solid and rigid, while textiles are soft, translucent and flexible. Architects and engineers are increasingly developing research on the amalgamation of these two materials. However, the use of textiles in concrete is usually involved in the making process and never exists in the final form of concrete. Under modern building technology, Textile, working with the concrete, is usually used as formwork, reinforcement or a tool to cast pattern on the surface of concrete.

Investigating the interconnection of concrete and textiles-our design embodies the strength of concrete along with the aesthetic and fluid qualities of textiles. Precedent technologies of fabric formwork and concrete impregnated fabric are an integral part of our process. The juxtaposition of the two technologies demonstrates the infinite possibilities in which concrete can be used and interpreted. Samurai Armour has been an imperative reference. This ancient technique has been applied to modern technologies, and enabled us to interlock and stitch multiple components bestowing flexibility and forms to an industrial, rigid material.
